About

IP address basics — Your IP address is the numeric identifier used to route internet traffic. Services see your public IP as the source of requests. We display IPv4 and IPv6 separately because many connections support one or both.

Public vs private IP — Public IP is visible on the internet. Private IP is used inside local networks (e.g. 192.168.x.x). With CGNAT, public IPv4 can be shared which may affect port-forwarding and self-hosted services.

Reverse DNS (rDNS) — Reverse DNS maps IP → hostname when a PTR record exists. Some mail/security systems use it as a trust signal. No rDNS is common for consumer lines.

ASN and ISP info — ASN identifies the autonomous system that announces your IP range (ISP, hosting provider or VPN). ASN/prefix help with diagnostics but are not precise geolocation.

FAQ

Why do I see a different IP than on my router?
CGNAT, proxies, or VPNs can make the internet-visible IP differ from what your router reports.
What’s the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 is the older, widely used format with limited addresses; IPv6 is newer with a much larger address space and a different notation.
What is rDNS (reverse DNS)?
rDNS maps an IP address to a hostname via PTR records. Many consumer IPs do not have rDNS.
What is ASN?
ASN identifies the autonomous system that announces the IP range—typically an ISP, hosting provider, or VPN network.
Is my public IP personal data?
In many contexts it can be considered sensitive. Avoid sharing it publicly unless necessary.
