New: Google Takeout Fixer

A browser tool that reads a Google Photos Takeout, matches every photo and video to its JSON file and writes the date taken, the time-zone offset and the GPS position back into the files.

What it does

  • The Google Takeout Fixer takes every .zip part of a Takeout at once (ZIP64, up to 50 GB in total) or the folder you extracted them to, and pairs each photo and video with its JSON file.
  • It handles the names that break simple scripts: .supplemental-metadata.json files, names cut at about 51 characters, counters that move from IMG(1).jpg to IMG.jpg(1).json, edited copies, live photo pairs and JSON files that ended up in another ZIP part.
  • JPEG photos get DateTimeOriginal with its OffsetTimeOriginal, plus the GPS position when the photo has none. MP4 and MOV videos get their creation time. A date the camera already wrote is kept unless you choose to replace it.
  • HEIC, PNG, WebP, GIF and RAW files are copied unchanged in this version. Their date goes into the ZIP entry time and, in folder mode, into set-dates.ps1 and set-dates.sh scripts that set each file's date.
  • Options: the time zone, the folder layout (keep the Takeout folders, by date as YYYY/MM, or one folder), skipping album copies (on by default), renaming to YYYY-MM-DD_HHMMSS_name and writing captions (off by default). The result goes to a folder in Chromium browsers such as Chrome and Edge, or to a ZIP download in every browser.

Where to import the fixed files

Six pages explain how the next app reads the dates: Apple Photos, Immich, Synology Photos, OneDrive, Nextcloud and an external drive.

Where files go, and what is free

Everything runs in your browser: archives are read in place and no photo is uploaded. Scanning and the full preview are free at any size, and writing is free for up to 25 files per job. One credit covers one whole job; a Day Pass or Pro covers unlimited jobs, the same plans as the other tools. Omnvert is not affiliated with Google, Meta or Microsoft.
