OneDrive's Photos view shows all your photos arranged by date, and OneDrive keeps a taken date for each photo. For many photos in a Google Photos Takeout that date is only in a JSON file next to the photo, which OneDrive does not read. This page opens the fixer with the Takeout folders kept as they are; write the date into each file on your computer, check it in File Explorer, then upload.
- Photos view
- Arranged by date; personal accounts only
- Windows reads
- Date taken from the EXIF tag the fixer writes
- The fixer writes
- DateTimeOriginal and its offset in JPEGs, creation time in MP4 and MOV
- Limits
- 250 GB per file, 400 characters per path

Date taken is not Modified
OneDrive's file list shows a Modified column, which is about the file, not about the photo. The Photos view, available for personal accounts and not for work or school accounts, arranges photos by date, and Microsoft's help says they are typically sorted by the date they were created. For each photo OneDrive also records when it was taken (its developer documentation calls this takenDateTime). The fixer puts that moment into the file, as DateTimeOriginal with its time-zone offset.
You can check the result before anything leaves your computer: in File Explorer's Details view, add the Date taken column. Windows reads it from the photo's EXIF tag, the same one the fixer writes. If the column is empty for a JPEG after fixing, that file had no date in its JSON or its name, and the report says why.
Uploading a whole Takeout
On the OneDrive website, select Upload and pick files, or in Chrome or Edge choose Folder on the Upload menu or drag the folder onto the page. Microsoft recommends the OneDrive sync app for any file larger than a few GB, and for a library of tens of thousands of photos it is the calmer route: copy the fixed folder into your OneDrive folder on the PC and let it sync.
How to do it
- 1Add every .zip part of your Takeout below, or the folder you extracted them to.
- 2Check the preview, pick the time zone if needed, and write the fixed files to a folder (Chrome, Edge) or a ZIP that you then unzip.
- 3In File Explorer, open the fixed folder in Details view and add the Date taken column to spot-check a few photos.
- 4Optional: run set-dates.ps1 in the fixed folder so the files' modified dates match the date taken as well.
- 5Copy the folder into your OneDrive folder, or upload it on the OneDrive website with Upload > Folder.
- 6Open the Photos view on the OneDrive website and check that the years are where they belong.
Known pitfalls
- Names OneDrive does not accept: " * : < > ? / \ | and leading or trailing spaces, plus names such as CON, PRN, AUX, NUL, desktop.ini, .lock, _vti_ and names starting with ~$. Album folder names from Google Photos are the ones to look at.
- The whole decoded path, file name included, cannot be longer than 400 characters. Choose "By date (YYYY/MM)" or "All in one folder" in the fixer if album names make paths long.
- The OneDrive website copies at most 2,500 files at a time, and it does not make thumbnails for images larger than 100 MB.
- HEIC, PNG, WebP and GIF files are copied unchanged in this version, so they reach OneDrive with whatever date is inside them. The set-dates scripts give them the right modified date at least.
Questions
Does the Photos view exist on a work account?
No. Microsoft says the Photos view is not available in OneDrive for work or school. The dates are still inside the files, so any viewer that reads EXIF shows them.
Why run set-dates.ps1 if the date is inside the photo?
Browsers cannot set a file's modified date, so the fixed files carry the day you wrote them. The script changes that date on disk, which helps anything that sorts by file date. It does not change the photos.
Are my photos uploaded to Omnvert?
No. The fixer runs in your browser tab: the archives are read from your disk and the fixed files are written back to your disk.
What does it cost?
Scanning and the full preview are free. Writing is free for up to 25 files per job; one credit covers a whole job, and a Day Pass or Pro covers unlimited jobs.
