PLY Repair
Upload a scanned PLY with holes or non-manifold edges. Holes are closed across the existing vertices and nothing is moved, so colours, properties and encoding come back as they were.
Invalid, duplicate and stray triangles are removed, faces are turned to agree with their shell, inside-out shells are turned outward and every hole up to 500 edges around is closed. No vertex is moved, and a file with nothing to fix comes back unchanged.
Your file is uploaded to our server to be processed, so it does leave your device. Temporary files are removed as soon as processing finishes, and the uploaded original is deleted automatically within 120 minutes at the latest. Nothing is stored permanently.
About
Scans are rarely closed. Photogrammetry leaves gaps where the camera never looked, LiDAR leaves holes behind shiny or dark surfaces, and the meshing step leaves duplicate triangles, slivers, stray faces and patches that point inward. A viewer shows that as see-through spots, a slicer refuses the file, and a measurement or volume comes out wrong. This tool repairs the PLY and gives you a PLY back, with the header layout, the encoding and the byte order as they were.
The repair runs in a fixed order: triangles with invalid coordinates, zero-area triangles and duplicates are removed, and of two copies with opposite winding the one the surrounding surface supports is kept. On an edge shared by three or more faces, only the extra faces hanging off it with an open edge are removed; a closed surface is never touched. Faces are then turned to agree with their neighbours in each shell, a closed shell that is inside out is turned outward and a hollow object keeps its cavity. Finally every hole whose rim is up to 500 edges long is closed by ear cutting that checks the new triangles never cross the surface.
No vertex is moved and none is added: every vertex record, with its colour, normal and extra values such as confidence, comes back bit for bit identical, so the scale and the measured shape stay exactly as captured. The triangles that close a hole connect vertices that are already there and take the per-face values and the texture coordinates of the face next to them. ASCII, binary little endian and binary big endian files keep their encoding and their element and property layout. The work runs on a native C++ repair engine on our server.
The report, measured on the file you download, lists holes found and closed, and open edges, triangles and watertightness before and after. Large gaps such as the underside of an object that was never captured, open sheets and stray single triangles are left open, because closing them would invent a surface; a scan with nothing to fix comes back byte for byte identical. Repair is free, takes files up to 300 MB and deletes them within 15 minutes of your download, at most 120 minutes otherwise. For a lighter scan afterwards, the PLY Mesh Reducer keeps the same format.
How it works
- 1Drop the .ply scan (up to 300 MB) on the upload area.
- 2Start the repair; no settings are needed.
- 3Read the report: holes closed, open edges and triangles before and after, watertight or not.
- 4Download the repaired .ply with the same header, encoding and properties.
