Make an AI 3D Model Printable

Models from Meshy, Tripo, Rodin or Hunyuan look fine on screen but are rarely solids: overlapping shells, self-intersections, holes and flipped faces that a slicer reports as hundreds of errors. Upload the GLB, OBJ or STL and get one closed, watertight shell, with a before-and-after report.

The surface is rebuilt on a grid this fine (1/600 of the model's diagonal for Standard) and then snapped back onto the original, so detail larger than one grid step survives.

About

Text-to-3D and image-to-3D generators produce models that look right and print wrong. Meshy itself sells a printability check for exactly this, looking for open surfaces, holes, non-manifold edges and degenerate faces, and charges 10 credits to repair them; on top of that, generated parts often overlap and pass through each other. A slicer shows such a model as hundreds of errors, or prints it with missing walls. This tool rebuilds such a model as one closed solid. Upload the GLB, OBJ or STL from Meshy, Tripo, Rodin, Hunyuan3D or any other generator and download an STL that every slicer reads cleanly.

Patching the mesh triangle by triangle cannot fix intersecting parts, so the model is rebuilt instead. The inside is decided by counting how often rays from three directions cross the surface, which stays correct where shells overlap or a few triangles are missing, and a new surface is built on a fine grid around that inside: a single closed, manifold shell by construction. That surface is then snapped back onto the original wherever the two are within half a grid step and face the same way, so the sculpted detail is kept, and finally simplified within a fraction of a grid step.

The report compares before and after: watertight or not, number of shells, open edges, self-intersections, flipped faces and triangles, plus the average and largest change from the original surface in millimetres. Small floating specks under 0.2 percent of the main body are removed unless you ask to keep them. AI models usually come in metres and one or two units tall, so you can set the print height and the file is scaled before it is rebuilt.

The conversion of GLB, OBJ, PLY and 3MF to triangles happens in your browser, so textures never leave your device; only the geometry is uploaded, processed on our server and deleted after your download. Colours are not part of an STL: keep the GLB for rendering and use this file to print. The 3D view and report are free; the download uses STL Repair's daily free use, then a credit pack, a 24-hour pass or a subscription shared with the other 3D tools.

How it works

  1. 1Open Make an AI 3D Model Printable and choose your file or enter the required input.
  2. 2Check the settings and start the process.
  3. 3The tool creates the result with temporary server-side processing.
  4. 4Download the output or copy the result when it is ready.

FAQ

›Why does my Meshy or Tripo model fail in the slicer?
Generators build a surface that looks right, not a solid: parts overlap, the surface passes through itself, some triangles are missing and some face inward. A slicer needs one closed surface whose every edge joins exactly two faces. Meshy's own printability check tests for open surfaces, holes, non-manifold edges and degenerate faces for this reason.
›What exactly does this tool do to the model?
It works out the inside from rays in three directions, builds a new closed surface around that inside on a fine grid, snaps it back onto your original surface wherever they match, removes floating specks and simplifies it within a fraction of a grid step. The result is one watertight, manifold shell.
›Will I lose detail?
Detail larger than one grid step is kept; the report shows the average and largest change from the original in millimetres. Standard detail uses a grid of 1/600 of the model's diagonal and High 1/1000 (on large or very detailed models the grid is limited by memory). Thin features smaller than a grid step, like a hair-thin sword tip, can thicken or close up.
›Which files can I upload?
GLB and glTF (with embedded buffers), OBJ, STL, PLY and 3MF, up to 150 MB. Non-STL files are converted to triangles in your browser and turned Z-up, the 3D-printing convention.
›My model is tiny in the slicer. Why?
AI models are usually in metres, about one or two units tall, and slicers read STL units as millimetres. Enter the print height you want and the model is scaled before it is rebuilt.
›Is this the same as STL Repair?
No. STL Repair fixes the connections of a mesh that is nearly right (gaps, flipped faces, small holes) and keeps every triangle. This tool rebuilds the surface, which is what models with overlapping parts and self-intersections need. Both share the same daily free use and plans.
›Do my textures and colours come through?
No: STL carries geometry only. Textures are not uploaded at all; the conversion happens in your browser.
